Abstract: In a study aimed to investigate the possibility of using new substrates for mushroom cultivation, Pleurotus sp. and Agrocybe sp.were grown on kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus). Mycelial development and lignin degradation were followed and compared to the same parameters recorded when both strains were cultivated on wheat straw and poplar prunings. Both mushrooms easily colonized all substrates and degraded lignin, although to a different extent. The formation of soluble lignin fractions was followed by NMR spectroscopy, which is proposed as a suitable method for preliminary investigations mushroom ability to degrade lignin.
