Abstract: Positive aeration of conventional (Phase I) mushroom compost stacks was re-examined as a potential low cost, retrofittable method of odour and process control for conventional mushroom compost yards. Passing between 1 to 15 m3 of air/tonne of wet composT/hour, (the exact volume depending on the stage of the composting process), eliminated the anaerobic core, produced a more homogenous compost and shortened the composting cycle by up to 30%. The elimination of the anaerobic core (and hence the production of volatile sulphur compounds and volatile fatty acids) can reduce odour emissions by up to 96% with dramatic implications for the size of buffer zones.
