Title: Phase I process in tunnels for the production of Agaricus bisporus compost with special reference to the importance of water
Authors: J.P.G. Gerrits, J.G.M. Amsing, G. Straatsma and L.J.L.D. van Griensven

Abstract:

Phase I processes have been performed with a non-composted one-day mixture of basic ingredients (straw, horse manure, broiler chicken manure, gypsum and water). Aeration, temperature, moisture content and process time were varied and the effect of inoculation with finished phase II compost or thermophilic fungi, was studied. Since a mixture of basic ingredients for indoor phase I has to be prepared within one day, special attention must be paid to homogeneity. Nitrogen and especially moisture content are important parameters. Spontaneous heating in a tunnel with natural convection (no forced aeration) for 3 to 6 days results in a substrate with sufficient Scytalidium for phase II. The importance of moisture, being the most important factor in relation to yield, is discussed.
