Abstract:

Due to governmental regulations in The Netherlands there is a strong need for a composting process not causing environmental problems. In the traditional outdoor process large amounts of ammonia and odorous compounds are emitted and environmental control is difficult. Previously it was shown that the odour was mainly caused by volatile sulphur compounds (VSC). Since the windrow phase was essential for a good yield, indoor Phase I processes were developed to mimic the outdoor phase. The production of VSC was measured in such indoor processes. The total VSC production found was comparable or even higher than that observed in the outdoor process. However, the indoor tunnel process makes air treatment possible. A comparison is given of biological and chemical air treatments.
