Title: Phylogeny of Lentinula spp. based on restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mtemal transcribed spacers and intergenic regions of ribosomal DNA
Authors: M.S. Nicholson, M.R. Thon and D.J. Royse

Abstract:

Internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and mtergenic regions (IGR) of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) repeat of Lentinula edodes, L. lateritia, L. novaezelandiae, and L. botyanaweie enzymatically amplified via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and subjected to restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. A phylogeny based on this data yielded clades separating the different species with individual isolates delineated within each clade. The Asia-Australasian-distributed species, Lentinula edodes, L. lateritia, and L. novaezelandiae, are monophyletic as indicated by their close species-clade relationships compared to the American-distributed L. boryana. This molecular phylogeny supports those based on morphological characters for Lentinula and further highlights the phylogenetic differences of the Asia-Australasian species of Lentinula.
