Title: Nucleotide sequence of a polymorphic A. aegerita mitochondrial DNA fragment: Evidence of a long open reading frame sharing common features with ribosomal proteins and possible involvement of tRNAs in transcript punctuation
Authors: T. Moulinier, G. Barroso and J. Labarère

Abstract:

A basidiomycete mitochondrial gene and its flanking sequences from the basidiomycete, Agrocybe aegerita, has been sequenced. The 3627 nt sequence harbours a long ORF encoding a 484 amino acids protein which reveals common features with the ribosomal proteins Varl from yeasts and S5 from Neurospora crassa. The flanking sequences show several secondary structures consistent with eight tRNA genes. These first data on the molecular organization of a basidiomycete mitochondrial gene suggest that in A. aegerita, tRNAs may act as punctuation signals in long primary transcripts.
