Abstract: Agaricus bisporus has gained a reputation as a difficult organism to manipulate through breeding. The recalcitrant nature of the organism stems entirely from its unusual biology. With the application of molecular techniques over the last decade many of these difficulties have been overcome. We present an overview of mushroom breeding in the mid 1990s, and introduce the current Amycel breeding strategy as an example of what is being achieved. In conclusion, we speculate on the changes likely to be seen in mushroom breeding in the next ten years.
