Title: The Influence of Heat Treatment, Genotype and Other Cultural Practices on the Production of Shiitake Mushrooms on Sawdust
Author: D.L. Rinker

Abstract:

The effects of substrate temperature treatment, genotype, spawn-run time and water immersion on Shiitake mushroom production on sawdust were studied. A mixture of red and white oak sawdust blended with 10% wheat bran and 10% millet was either pasteurized or autoclaved. There was no significant difference in yield between pasteurization or sterilization nor was there a significant interaction between genotype and heat treatment. However, the yield response among genotypes was significant. Immersion of the sawdust log in water between flushes was essential to optimize production; misting alone was not sufficient. Spawn-run time up to 60 days did not effect production. When Shiitake substrate was pasteurized repeatedly, each after a cooling period, the lowest level of infection by Trichoderma occurred after two heating cycles.
