Abstract: Insecticides have been used for many years by french growers to combat mushroom flies (e. g. sciarid fly), mainly organophosphorus compounds which are registered for use on mushrooms (chlorfenvinphos, sulfotep). Since 1984, we have investigated for new products who interfer with insect physiology (insect growth regulators, chitin synthesis inhibitors). Two products, methoprene and cyromazine, have given good control of sciarid larvae but in our experiments, the level of control with methoprene is slightly superior to that achieved by cyromazine. No significantly phytotoxic effect was observed on different mushroom strains. These good results have permitted the registration of methoprene and cyromazine. Presently insect growth regulators are integrated in the pest control strategies with application on the spawning compost or on the casing soil immediatly after casing. The use of these products have significantly reduced sciarid fly problem in French caves. These paper reports on results of experiments done to assess the effects of different chemicals on the mushroom sciarid fly.
