Abstract: Four deciduous ornamental species (cotoneaster, Cotoneaster dammeri 'Coral Beauty'; dogwood. Cornus alba 'Argenteo-marginata'; forsythia. Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood Gold'; and weigela. Weigela 'Bristol Ruby') were grown in trickle-irrigated containers with 100% bark (control medium), 50% bark and 50% of each of 5 different spent mushroom composts, or 100% of each compost. Media treatments with compost were either leached or unleached. Species growth response was variable but bore little relationship to compost formulation, leaching, contents of nutrients in leaves, physical and chemical characteristics of the media, or to initial and subsequent salt levels in the container media. Regardless of media, all plants were of marketable quality at the end of the growing season.
