Abstract: The world's most popular white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, can be cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world e.g. the plains of India, for limited periods only as summer temperatures are generally in excess of 30oC for 6-7 months of the year. For this reason, there is a demand for mushroom strains which can tolerate high temperatures. The introduction of high temperature tolerant strains is essential if the capital investment on commercial units is to be fully realised in such countries. This paper reviews the past work on high temperature tolerant strains of Agaricus bitorquis, describes a screening programme to identify high yielding strains within the H.R.I, culture collection and reports on the results to date of intra- and interstock hybridisation trials.
