Abstract: In order to avoid allergies caused by spores of Pleurotus, a program for the production of sporeless or poorly sporulating strains has been carried out at INRA, in Bordeaux, France. This work has already led to the selection, among the series of genotypes tested, of a strain of Pleurotus pulmonarius with a low sporulation rate, about 100 times less than normal strains. This strain is commercialized by the spawn company SOMYCEL as strain 3300 INRA-SOMYCEL. As compared to standard strains, the fruit body morphology is quite different, a central stipe, a round and brown cap exhibiting at first flush indented edges, which disappear at later flushes. The behaviour of strain 3300 under various cultivation conditions was checked through experiments carried out both at INRA-BORDEAUX (air conditionned rooms) or at SOMYCEL (greenhouse). Several durations of spawn run (21, 26 and 33 days) as well as several fruiting temperatures (12°C, 16°C) were tested for their effects on yield of this strain. As compared to the standard sporulating strain Pleurotus pulmonarius-SOMYCEL 3014, the number of days required up to the first day of picking is slightly longer for this new strain, and the yield always lower. However, as compared to the poorly spored strain 3200 SOMYCEL the results obtained were almost similar.
