Title: Pleurotus Species of Greece: An Evaluation of Their Morphological and Physiological Characteristics
Authors: G. Zervakis and C. Balis

Abstract:

During a broad-scale survey on the occurrence of Pleurotus species in Greece, a number of specimens were collected from various geographical areas of the country and were cultivated in the laboratory under comparable conditions. After a thorough study of their morphological characteristics (fruitbodies, hyphal system, basidiospores, mycelial cultures), they have been assigned to four different species, i.e. P. pulmonarius (Fr.) Quel., P. ostreatus (Jacq. ex Fr.) Kummer, P. eryngii (DC. ex Fr.) Quel, and P. cystidiosus O.K. Miller. The existence in Europe of the last species is reported for the first time. On the other hand, some physiological features (earliness, rapidity of mycelial growth on different agar media, cellulolytic activity) they presented, appear to be suitable -in relation with the morphological criteria- for use in taxonomy.
