Abstract: Sawdust (80%) supplemented with rice bran (10%) and white millet (10%) was heat treated (100°C, HTC or 122°C) with live steam in a pressurizable mixer for 30 min. The substrate then was cooled, inoculated and aseptically bagged. After a spawn run of 40 days, the plastic bags containing the substrate were removed and the synthetic logs subjected to a production environment. There were no significant differences in BE between substrate heat treatments in either crops I or 11. There were few differences between BE plotted over time with regard to treatments and crops. Significant differences were found among heat treatments for average weight (size) of mushrooms in both crops. Mushrooms in crop I heat-treated at 100°C were significantly greater in size than the mushrooms produced from a substrate heat-treated at 111°C. In crop II, substrates heat-treated at 100°C and 122°C produced larger mushrooms than a substrate heat-treated at IITC.
