Abstract: Verticillium fungicola grew well on a number of carbon sources but best growth was observed in media containing glucose, mannitol, sucrose, galactose and mannose as sole carbon sources respectively. The pentoses arabinose, ribose and xylose were poorly utilized. With the exception of sodium nitrite, good growth occurred on all the nitrogen sources investigated. Glutamine and glutamic acid however, were utilized slightly better than most of the others. The optimum temperature for growth seems to lie between 22 and 24°C, with the optimum for sporulation very close to that. At 320c conidia germinated but mycelial growth was arrested. Light had little effect on vegetative growth but sporulation was significantly better in light than in darkness.
