Abstract: Cypress wood contains a number of fungi and is implicated as a reservoir of Mushroom Virus Disease (MVD) inocula. Cypress wood from mushroom trays was autoclaved and either buried in compost containing an MVD virus-infected Agaricus bisporus spawn or cultured. Symptom development of MVD occurred and included a delay in 1st break, spawn degeneration, abnormal sporocarps, and crop loss. Pasteurizing at 52C and 63C for 2h were judged to be the most effective at reducing the impact of MVD inocula in 2 cm W cypress boards. A variety of fungi and free-living nematodes were viable following heat treatment at 776 mmHg for 20 min (121C).
