Abstract: It is well known that mushroom beds are only successful when covered with casing soil. Peat is widely accepted as a suitable medium for mushroom casing soil, when neutralized with limestone. But peat as a natural product is only available for a limited period. Therefore it is important to look for substitutes for peat. We have investigated crumbled waste paper and a mixture of crumbled waste paper and peat as mushroom casing soil. The yield of two initiative growing experiments showed little difference between the waste paper formulas and the control (peat + limestone). But some results were not significantly different at all. If further experiments turned out successfully, the commercial use of casing soil, from waste paper instead of peat, could go ahead in a wide range.
