Abstract: Bench-scale reactors were used to appreciate some aspects of the biodégradation pathway of wheat straw. Biochemical and biological parameters were tested to assess straw degradability : measurement of released CO2 and NH3, determination of NDF content (Neutral Detergent Fiber), dosage of enzyme activities extracted from compost (laccase, proteases, cellulases). Three temperatures were tested : 45, 55 and 65°C. 45°C seemed to be the best temperature to obtain an efficient mushroom compost. The experimental technics used in this work appeared to be good tools to study microbial and biochemical mechanisms of composting and to determine the consequences of the variability in raw materials used for mushroom compost production.
