Title: Immuno-gold labelling - A potential technique for the detection and identification of micro-organisms in compost
Authors: C.E. Frost and P.T. Atkey

Abstract:

It may be possible to improve methods of composting lignocellulosic material by manipulating the micro-organisms involved. To achieve this the role of the micro-organisms needs to be more clearly understood. Immuno-gold labelling enables specific organisms to be identified in the electron microscope. It should be possible to use this technique to study distribution of micro-organisms involved in composting and the inter-relationships between them and their substrate. Initially it is necessary to demonstrate the specificity of the immuno-label in vitro on pure cultures of the organism.
