Abstract: The role of water in the indoor process in tunnels has been studied. Because the compost is prepared in a very short time, the ash content is lower and the percentage organic matter higher than in a conventional compost. This affects its water holding capacity. The optimum moisture content of indoor compost has been studied in relation to the effect of plastic under the compost, addition of water at spawning and watering the casing soil. Attention is paid to balance sheet studies of water and dry matter. The significance of water and possible interactions between water and other factors, relevant for the indoor process, are discussed.
