Abstract: Compost samples were taken during the various stages of preparation and analysed by; thermal methods such as derivative thermogravimetiy for degree of fibre breakdown, elemental analysis for carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents and bomb calorimetry for calorific value. The results from thermal analyses agreed with the data derived by the standard methods for determining cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and nitrogen. Determination of soluble carbohydrates and polyphenols during composting indicated that these may provide useful information concerning the complex biochemical changes which take place during compost preparation. Assessments of compost were also carried out for pH, ammonia, ash, nitrogen, microbial populations, minerals and moisture.
