Abstract: Environmentally controlled composting (ECO is one possible technique to meet the odour emission levels set by environmental monitoring agencies. During 1989, over 30 trials were conducted in an 80 tonne capacity tunnel. These trials were satisfactory in reducing odours, ammonia being the only odourous compound identified in significant quantities in the exhaust stream. Dispersion and dilution of this gas stream in the atmosphere will be rapid, resulting in minimal impact on the surrounding area. With some exceptions, crop yields on an area basis were lower for ECC than for conventional compost. A processing strategy with a very high temperature stage, followed by reinoculation with non-sterilised compost, provided a marginally better yield than strategies without a high temperature phase. These trials have indicated that ECC could be useful, however relocation was the only option for Melbourne Mushrooms given the time constraint imposed by regulatory authorities.
