Abstract: The straw mushroom, Volvariella volvacea, is an important edible fungus of the tropics and sub tropics. Results from scanning electron microscopic examination of the hymenium show that most of the mature basidia are tetrasporic or with 4 sterigmata. However, different spore patterns on basidium were also found. The possible sources of variation in this primary homothallic fungus will be discussed.
