Abstract: The detection of certain undesirable changes in commercial mushroom cultures relies upon the spontaneous expression of sectors (saltation). Research into sectoring phenomena has been hampered by the inconsistent occurrence of visible stromatic inclusions in experimental subcultures. We present reproducible techniques for inducing the expression of sectors in the laboratory. Controlled expression of these phenomena has facilitated our investigations into the mechanisms of sectoring. These new methods have been useful for the analysis of chemical sectorgens. We have also observed a previously unreported condition that we term latent sectoring. Commercial application of these techniques has resulted in process changes leading to improved spawn appearance and performance.
