Abstract: "Shiitake", the most popular edible mushroom in Japan, is a nonpathogenic white rot fungus. Its ligninolytic activity was also found to be as high as that of Phanerochaete chrysosporium well-known as an excellent ligmn-degrader. Therefore, we have attempted to breed some useful and safe strains with higher ligninolytic activity fron "Shiitake" mushrooms. To select "Shiitake" strains which degrade lignin preferentially, we have developed a simple method using lignm and Avicel plates. Most of the strains selected by the method were also found to have high ligninolytic activity than the original stram in a wood-decay test with beech powders. By cultural selection and production of strains by mating, we obtained a strain which causes a lignin loss of 38.4% in the wood-decay test for a month. We will also show the relationship between degradation of lignm in beech powder and activities of peroxidase and laccase using the strains selected.
