Abstract: The traditional agricultural method can provide adequate amount of food for a great many years, but the real problem lies in providing increasing amount of protein for an increasing world population. Neither synthesis nor conversion of fossil fuel can provide sufficient protein. Thus, supply must, therefore, be provided from Agriculture. Everyone is aware of traditional method to get food. But there are some non-green plants which can synthesize protein though they are unable to produce their own carbohydrates. These produce protein when supplied with carbohydrates and few mineral salts. Thus some fungi can be used for providing sufficient amount of food and are easily multiplicable. Most of the fungi are capable of utilizing more complex texture of organic compounds which occur as agricultural and industrial wastes. Mushrooms are highly rated food all over the world. This offers good prospects for exploitation of mycelial biomass of fleshy fungi. Thus it seems essential to further investigate the possibilities of using conventional fermentation methods for the production of mycelial mass from Pleurotus spp. by utilizing agricultural wastes.
