Abstract: The tropics of America are also known as the Neotropical realm. Generally speaking, it is located between the Tropics of Cancer (23° 27' North) and Capricorn (23° 27' South). However, most scientists include some other regions with strong tropical influence as Florida, USA, because this state is largely subtropical. The neotropical realm covers an area of about 15 million square kilometers, and is formed by, partly or wholly, 25 countries, which means that most of Latin America is included. Mushroom cultivation in this region has been poorly developed, if compared with other tropical areas of the world, for instance Southeast Asia, in spite of the great potentiality to cultivate edible fungi.
