Abstract: The use of sane wild mushroons as food has been world wide since probably prehistoric times, but the history of cultivation of a few edible species is coiparatively recent – only a few centuries old. Cultivation was limited to a few countries before 1939; hcwever, since then a number of additional countries all over the globe have taken to this activity (over seventy at present) and their number is rising continuously. India is a vast country with a great variety of topographical and climatic conditions and as such it is not unreasonable to expect a rich mushroom flora. Reference to the existence of edible mushroons in the sub-continent can be traced to ancient medical treatise Samhita of Atreya Caraka (3,000 + 500 B.C) . Though wild edible species were collected and consumed in seme parts of Indian sub-continent since ages past, cultivation is only a very recent phenanenon.
