Abstract: In 1985 Hungary produced 6,000 tons of Agaricus bisporus and 2,000 tons of oyster mushroom. In 1986 the production of Agaricus rose to 7,000 tons but that of Pleurotus spp. fell back to 1,500 tons, due to the significant reduction of production in one large farm. Approximately 70 p.c. of the country's total of 8,500 tons is produced by the Duna Co-operative and its mushroom production system. Besides significant export, the average per capita consumption of cultivated mushrooms was 750 grams in 1986. During the past two decades of modern mushroom growing, the volume of Hungary's mushroom production got multiplied by six. This pace of growth is above that of world production.
