Title: Antitumor Action of Fruit Bodies of Edible Mushrooms Orally Administered to Mice
Authors: K. Mori, T. Toyomasu, H. Nanba and H. Kuroda

Abstract:

Chihara et al. recently, isolated a lentinan (6-1.3 glucan having branching of 1.6 bond) from the fruit bodies of Lentinus edodes (Shiitake). Small doses of this B-glucan were shown to produce the antitumor activities against allogeneic and syngeneic tumor implants in mice by intraperitoneal injection. It still remains to be clarified whether this mushroom, when orally administered to mice, has such effects. For clarification of this problem, tumor-bearing mice were fed on the dried powdered of L. edodes. This present research describes the remarkable suppressive action of edible mushrooms against tumor growth.
