Abstract: Cultivation of Agarieus bisporus (Lange) Sing, has been in vogue in India for the past several years. Its cultivation has been mainly restricted to hilly areas because of being a temperate mushroom and extended to other parts of the country during winter only unless best environment control facilities are provided. Such limitation has never permitted a mushroom grower to take beyond two crops in a year. This constraint has been a great limiting factor in the establishment of a strong mushroom industry in the country. So for all research efforts have been directed to improve the existing technology for the cultivation of A. bisporus without much emphasis for research on other cultivatable species of this genus. No work has been done under Indian conditions on cultivating A. bitorquis. Keeping in view its desirable attributes it has become imperative to undertake detailed investigation on different aspects of the cultivation, which would help in introducing the cultivation during warmer periods. Keeping in view the increasing demand, choice and popularity, studies on A. bitorquis (Quel.) Sacc. were taken up with suitable substrates for growth of mushrooms and locally available casing material were also assessed to see their effect on production of mushrooms.
