Abstract: Since the introduction of white button mushroom in India in early sixties, research in various aspects of mushroom cultivation has been carried out but not much attention has been paid to strain improvement work. Infact, the strain Sll, introduced about two decades ago, is still raost popular coramercially. However, this strain does not have very good shelf life and with the increasing awareness amongst growers there is need for strains having better quality and higher yields. At present, in India this mushroom is being cultivated on compost prepared by long as well as short method under both natural and controlled conditions. Further, the compost ingredients and cultivation systems differ from place to place. Thus it is necessary to introduce or produce strains having wider adaptability and high phenotypic stability.
