Abstract: Since the isolation of protoplasts in Schizophyllum commune has been reported by de Vries and Wessels (1), some studies have appeared on the isolation and regeneration of protoplasts from several basidiomycete species (2-8). Recently , a considerable attention has been paid to protoplast fusion and its application to the strain improvement of edible mushrooms. However, little work has been carried out to obtain interspecific hybrids of edible mushrooms, although a few reports exist on intraspecific fusion of Phanerochaete chrysosporium (9), Copricus macrorhizus (10) and Pleurotus ostreatus (11). /p> In the present paper, we have reported on the intra- and interspecific protoplast fusion between Pleurotus species and subsequent fruit body formation of fusion products.
