Abstract: Two species of mushroom sciarid, Lycoriella agarici Loudon and Lycoriella solani (Winn,), are a significant problem in mushroom cultivation in New South Wales (Clift, 1981). The main insecticide used as a mushroom casing layer treatment against sciarids prior to 1978 was diazinon but this has mainly been replaced by pirimiphos-ethyl (Clift 1979). Pirimiphos-ethyl is generally providing effective control of sciarids, but there are occasional reports of control problems. Insecticide resistance in Lycoriella auripila (Winn.) was reported from England by Binns (1976), but the resistance was not quantified by laboratory tests. The present investigation was carried out to find a suitable method for testing insecticides against sciarids in the laboratory and to establish base line data for three organophosphorus insecticides which are used in mushroom culture.
