Title: Explosion Treatment of Pine Wood Wastes for the Production of Mushroom Casing Material
Authors: H. Mamers and D. Menz

Abstract:

The most widely used casing material of the Australian mushroom growing industry has been peat moss. However, peat moss is an imported product which is rapidly becoming more expensive and difficult to obtain. The present work was undertaken to explore the possibility of manufacturing a satisfactory. alternative casing material from local wood wastes. Pine waste was of particular interest because of its potentially low cost and ready availability in large quantities.

The explosion treatment method used to experimentally process the pine wood waste was derived from a novel pulping technique previously developed at the CSIRO Division of Chemical Technology (Mamers et al., 1979). The method, which in its final stage involved an explosively rapid discharge of processed material through a specially designed nozzle, was potentially simpler and more versatile than other available.treatment schemes.
