Title: Yield Performance of Different Strains of Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) on Paddy Straw in Pakistan
Authors: S.M. Khan, A.G. Kausar and M.A. Ali

Abstract:

The oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.), locally Icnown as 'dingri', grows wild in Azad Kashmir, and northern hilly areas of Pakistan. It is consumed by local population and meets the requirements concerning their flavour and taste. Although oyster mushroom is rated high for taste, amino acid composition and quality, only a few species of this mushroom have been cultivated commercially. (Kurtzman, 1975; Kalberer and Kensch, 1974; Jandaik and Kapoor, 1976).

The oyster mushroom is grown commercially in Europe where it is sold at double the price of the button mushroom. The species commonly grown is Pleurotus ostreatus. Several other species have also been brought into cultivation like P. florida (Heltay, 1979), P. sajor-caju (Jandaik, 1977) and P. flabellatus (Quimmio, 1978).

The studies reported in this paper are the part of a research programme with a purpose to explore the high yielding strains of oyster mushroom for commercial growing in Pakistan.
