Abstract: Since 1974, Agarlcus bitorquis (Quel.) Sacc. has been grown commercially in the Netherlands. Varieties of this species are immune to mushroom virus disease (van Zaayen, 1976) and produce snow-white fruiting bodies of good keeping quality. They are suitable for cultivation in summer, requiring higher growing temperatures than varieties of A.bisporus. In November 1979, brown spotted mushrooms occurred in some commercial crops. The yield did not decrease, but affected mushrooms were inferior in quality. The present paper describes trials to detect the causal agent and to control it.
