Title: Prospects of Mushroom Culture in Pakistan
Authors: S.M. Khan and A.G. Kausar

Abstract:

Nature has adorned Pakistan with a variety of climatic environments in different regions. The mushrooms can be grown commercially in a variety of environments. Northern hilly areas with high humidity and low temperatures are particularly suited for the cultivation of Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes), button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) and oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.). Paddy straw mushrooms (Volvariella volvacea) and oyster mushrooms can be cultivated during summer and winter months, respectively, in the plains of the Punjab and Sind and in the coastal areas of Baluchistan and Sind around the year. Agricultural and industrial wastes are also available as substrates in these regions in large quantities.
