Abstract: The development of the mushroom industry has been enormous. In the Netherlands, for example, a yield of about 5 - 1 0 kg/m2 over 9 picking weeks in 1958 (Bels-Koning en Bels, 195S) had increased to about 20 kg/m2 over 6 picking weeks by 1980. By using full-grown compost from tunnels, 140 kg per m2 of compost can be filled rather than 100 kg per m2 and consequently yields per m2 have increased, 30 kg/m3 and higher being no exception nowadays.Mechanization especially has developed a lot and about one third of the growing area in The Netherlands is now picked mechanically. Whereas increasing the yield had priority in the past, now quality has corae to the fore. This will probably remain the case in the future as competition increases. Widening the choice by cultivation of other species of the cultivated mushroom may play a role regarding competition as well. The breeder has to look to the future, especially as it takes a long time to develop new strains.
