Abstract: The preparation of a compost is considered by experienced growers to be the most important stage in commercial culture. Also, it may be said that to prepare consistently a high yielding compost, is also the most difficult of growing operations in which the judgement, experience and skill of the composter, plays a major part in dealing with the many variables which affect the process. The basic methods adopted for present-day composting are variants of two contrasting methods outlined by Sinden and Hauser (1950), (1953) and often referred to as Short composting and by Rasmussen (1962) who outlined what is termed, Long Composting.
