Abstract: In the course of this century, mushroom culture has developed into a highly capitalized, high technology branch of industry in the field of market gardening throughout the world. It is not surprising, therefore, that the majority by far of the research and experiment projects in the field of mushroom growing in Europe and in the USA focus on cultivated mushrooms. As a result, two different growing systems have evolved that, apart from minor deviations, are applied in mushroom culture all over the world. The two systems are: shelves, and trays. The shelf-system is usually referred to as the "Dutch" culture system. Application of the shelf-system has extended from Holland to certain parts of West Germany, in incidental cases to other European countries, and to the USA. Trays are most widely applied in West Germany, in the various major growing countries in Europe, and overseas.
