Abstract: The conclusion drawn at the excellent 1st North American Conference in San Francisco, when examining the choice between tray and shelf systems, was that the decision was a finelybalanced one, depending as much on a particular farm's circumstances as the merits of the respective alternatives. It was reported too, on that occasion, that the new Darlington mushroom farm at Poling, Sussex, England, would use a conventional tray approach, using polythene-clad buildings to reduce capital costs.
