Volume 11 Part 1 Article 12
Year 1981
Title: The Use of Spent Mushroom Compost in Vegetable Production
Author: R.T. Male

Abstract:

Poultry manure is widely used in the vegetable industry, especially under intensive production, to improve soil organic matter and structure and provide nutrients. Savings in inorganic fertilizer costs can be made by making use of these organic nutrients (Piggott, et al, 1976).

Spent mushroom compost is becoming available in increasing quantities from mushroom producers. Outlets include nurserymen, flower growers and market gardeners, "Home Mushroom Growing Kits" and stockpiling. Problems have been experienced in container grown plants (Fames, 1977) because of the restricted volume, but, having a similar nutritional status to fowl manure, it was felt by the industry there may be a place for it in vegetable production where this restriction does not exist (Hashim, 1978). Experiments commenced in 1978 and covered 11 crops.
