Abstract: Although edible auricularias are popular in China and many other countries, the formation and development of their fruiting bodies are poorly understood. There are some reports dealing with the microevolution (Duncan, 1972; Duncan and McDonald, 1967), the structure of fruiting bodies (Lowy, 1951, 1952), and an abnormal variety of Auricularia polytricha with white pilei (Komatsu, 1977). More information on this group of fungi is needed. Tu and Cheng (1975) studied Taiwanese auricularias and found A. polytricha to be the most common species in both commercial cultivation and wild growth. The preliminary result of their studies on the formation and development of this species is reported herein.
