Abstract: The 2-spored nature of Agaricus bisporus has led many authors to speculate that this species is heterothallic even though single spores are fertile. (EVANS, 1959 , LAMBERT, 1959 , LANGE, 1959 ,PELHAM, 1967) However, it was not until 1971, that the heterothallism of this species was convincingly demons trated (ELLIOTT, 1971 , MILLER, 1971) This finding has since been confirmed and the life-cycle thoroughly investigated (RAPER C A et al 1972 , ELLIOTT, 1972 , MILLER and KANANEN, 1972). Sexuality m A bisporus provides an almost complete contrast to that expressed in most other homobasidiomycete species that have been studied. Heterokaryon formation is limited to the junction zone between compatible mycelia and there is no visible indication of its occurrence. Heterokaryosis is not extended by nuclear migration through the homokaryotic mycelia and the heterokaryon of A bisporus is not dikaryotic. However, m common with many other basidiomycetes the compatibility of single spore isolates is controlled by a single matmg-type factor, (cf. GINNS, 1974) and there is some evidence that the factor is multiallelic (ELLIOTT, 1973).
