Abstract: In the relatively short time since its introduction (Poppe, 1972) as a commercial mushroom, Agaricus bitorquis has become a recognized part of the worldwide mushroom industry. An objective of this study was to determine the growth and formation of primordia of 22 strains of A. bitorquisA. bisporus a characteristic such as linear growth on agar or compost cannot be relied upon to predict mushroom production. The ability of A. bitorquis to form primordia in aseptic culture was considered more likely to be related to mushroom production on compost.
