Title: Low Voltage Cable Heating in Mushroom Beds
Authors: U. Hauser, J. W. Sinden and E. Hauser

Abstract:

While the optimal temperature in the mushroom beds is usually attained by heating the air in the houses or by conserving the fermentation heat of the manure for some time, a method has been developed to heat the manure direct by electrical wires in the bed base.

Several years practical experience has shown that this method can be used under certain limited conditions, and then with good results. The success depends largely on the growing method, on the kind of growing rooms, and the availability and price of the electricity.

We can give some technical information as to the installation, dimensions, effect, and economy of such a heating system, which has been gathered in the mushroom house of Dr. Hauser-Hauser, Gossau- Ziirich for two years. Normal and low voltage have been applied with the same cultural effect. Both types of voltage require different technical installations and both have advantages and disadvantages. The general experience has shown that with the technical state of the last few years low voltage was preferable.
