The Difficulties of Mushroom Growing in Denmark and their influence on the General Success of Cultivation

H. Paludan

The cultivation of mushrooms m Denmark probably began m the middle of the 18th century It was learned m France and carried out at the Manor Houses m the countrv usually m a mushroom cellar The mycelium was taken from old beds and cleanliness and ventilation were ignored At first growers sometimes succeeded but they usually failed later and gradually mushroom growing was abandoned.

the introduction of American spawn m 1928 brought a radical change Beds were laid down m glasshouses and production increased, but the sale of fresh mushrooms was difficult, as consumers had grown used to tinned mushrooms In the course of the next few years imported canned mushrooms were entirely replaced by the fresh product Production was greatly increased and the price fell from 8 to 2 | crowns per kilogram Sometimes the market could not absorb all the home produced mushrooms.

In 1935 a Growers' Association was formed and among other things worked for the canning of Danish grown mushrooms Meanwhile, growers met a series of difficulties with Mycogone, Mushroom Flies, Sprmgtails, Mites, Gall Gnats, and Plaster Mould , they gradually learned to overcome these pests and diseases with DDT, sulphur fumigation, better composting, and greater general cleanliness At present, production is still increasing.

During the War many mushrooms were grown m disused pig styes, but now they are mainly grown m glasshouses between other crops and are available from this source all the year round.
