Abstract: It is always interesting for growers to compare their yields, between farms, between systems of growing, or between countries, in a spirit of rivalry; but we have to look for something more than this to justify any serious interest in such comparisons. I think there is much more to be found but it is useful to consider just how far such comparisons take us, what factors may influence yields under such widely differing conditions as are covered by surveys of this kind, and what assumptions are made in comparing the yields at all.
