Abstract: La France Disease A very serious infectious disease of mushrooms has been observed in Chester County, Pa., for several years. Usually only one or two plants were affected per year and only a few houses in each plant. In the current season increased infection has been noted. It must be considered as a serious danger for the crops since it is contagious and causes a soft wet rot of the mushrooms during one break followed by cessation of production in rapidly spreading areas. The disease was first observed in March, 1948, by Dr. J. W. Sinden of The Pennsylvania State College in a mushroom house operated by La France Brothers at Upland, Chester County, and described in a report. Three " doubles " of the same block were filled with identical compost. One was planted with spawn of two different sources, the others with one of the two kinds respectively. All were cased with soil from the same pile. While two houses had perfectly normal crops, the one with the two different spawns was affected by the disease.
